I work in films as a screenwriter – that's a fancy word for someone who writes scripts for peanuts and does a lot of praying. Strolling down a street in Santa Rosa trying to think up a plot and failing, I met the pal in the photo (that's me on the right). If I'd had my tap-shoes on I'd have done a Fred Astaire because he gave me a great idea – to start a webstore selling just musicals, British as well as American.
So I got a few favourites together, starting with The Jazz Singer in 1927 and including the greats of the 1930s/’40s/’50s and '60s – including George Formby, a young Gracie Fields, Jessie Matthews, even the comedian Terry-Thomas (Gran will remember him) and added some which aren't musicals but have musical content, such as The Who soundtrack in Quadrophenia or little Shirley Temple's excursions into song and dance with Bojangles Robinson.
They really do NOT make 'em like that any more!
You'll find something here for all ages, friends and family. Renting films is fine, but these don't cost much to buy and it's nice to own them and start a collection (especially some of the rarer ones). Also retro musicals make great gifts for just about anybody, being:
- thoughtful and imaginative
- collectable
- only the price of a lipstick or coffee for two
- great for entertaining and singalongs
Take time out and treat yourself to that one you saw years ago and would love to see again but it never shows up on TV. You might find it here.
